In this blog post, I’m going to share with you more about WeChat and all of its functions.
What is WeChat?
WeChat is a Chinese chatting app. Well, it was a chatting app in the beginning but it was soon developed into so much more. Now, it’s a chatting app with a million other functions as well. If you link your WeChat account with your bank account, then you can send money to your WeChat contacts. You can also use the app to pay wherever you go. The store or the person you have to pay just have to show you their QR code. You can scan it and bum, then you’ve paid. Everyone , even tuktuk drivers and street vendors, use this system. It’s just so convenient.
Apart from being able to chat, call and send money with the app, WeChat can also help you buy train and plane tickets. If you are in need of a hotel, a taxi or a public bus, you just need to open the app and search for it. Within seconds, you’ve found what you need.
The app can help you with so many other things as well. If you want to know more, then check out this video I made about WeChat:
What is WeChat Official?
WeChat Official is an official page made for different brands, restaurants, news outlets etc. The official accounts are all collected under one folder inside the app. This is where you can read all news from your favorite media star or CCTV. I love to follow many different accounts so I’m able to read the news, learn new things about China and find events I would like to attend.
If you aren’t sure which to follow, you can check out this video I made about the official accounts that I’m following:

Why is WeChat so important?
WeChat is one of the most used apps in China because of all the different functions. I feel like I use it in any aspects of my life in China. If you are planning on going to China any time soon, I would definitely recommend you to download the app and set up an account. It’ll make your life in China so much more convenient.
But let’s be honest, even though WeChat is freaking awesome, you’ll still want to chat with your western friends once in a while. China has blocked most foreign websites which is why it’s super important for you to download a VPN (Virtual Private Network) before going to China. You can download it in China but it’s definitely easier to buy it before arriving in the big dragon country. There are many different VPN services out there. The free ones are more unstable, especially every time the government decides to crack down on them.
Watch my friend Lauren and I discuss the problem here:
I’ve been using Express VPN since I came back to China in summer 2016. If you ask me, that’s the most reliable one with the best customer service. If you want to make sure you have safe and full access to Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, check out Express VPN here.
